Let’s Give Them Something to Wonder About
March 9, 2006
I love how our blogs make us look cooler than we are in real life. At times these spaces on the Internet seem more real than the people we meet. Face to face, we are all just people without placards stripped of our glamour.
People pass me by and I wonder if these ordinary people have a blog, where they rave and rant and talk that way and walk that way. I wonder if I have ever read their words, comments, nodding my head, or wanting to bitchslap them, or laughing out loud.
I wonder if when I pass them by, something in the air will change. I wonder if that turn of the head and look in my direction means something.
When I stand at the back of a crowded room, I see the edges of webs connecting us. Laughing faces in gathered groups, a sparkling red line crackling through the air all the way to the other corner, to the other laughing face in the other gathered group. And I think to myself, “They would never even know it”.
Perhpas if they did, they would remain in those disconnected corners.

…we are in real life…
real life? what is that ? what we project to others off line? is there that much difference from our projection online ? even if there is a difference, are any of that real?
we are real to ourselves alone. we create and interpret ourselves constantly (unconsciously for the most part) to the outside whether online or off .
ultimately in reality we are all alone with no real connections.

Thanks!
I think there’s a definite difference between what we project online and what we project offline. I find this very… quaint if you will. As for whether all that is intrinsically real… Probably not. But that’s another dismal powwow for another day.

you are welcome.
as long as we are honest to ourselves about our projections or whatever it is ok imo.

i was reading your old posts last night (or rather this morning), you should really write something, i have no idea what but something.

Hmmmm….Guess your correct to a certain extent. Language sure makes ones image look colourful. Then again I wonder if one is what he writes ?!? He has to be, coz that is what he is made up of ya? A tad lil bit of what he writes at least
There have been many times I had wanted to pounce on people and question them as to whether or not they owned a blog. Surprisingly, most of em (so called interesting people) didn’t have profiles online. I wish they did…Sigh…

will someone please enlighten me as to what the etiquette is within the blogging community?
For instance, I have just noticed that I have the same “theme”on my blog as Prose. I like it, because I love the font and the whole minimalist feel of the”space”. Is that ok with you, Prose that I am using the same theme or have I committed a serious breach of blog etiquette?

prose : you have a wonderful blog and i wonder on a daily basis who you are. i’m not bordering on perverse-stalker here, but really, you intrigue me and that’s a compliment.
you’re absoloutely right about ‘how our blogs make us look cooler than we are in real life’. i shamelessly love this facade i put on too. but then, alot about me i’m afraid is quite a facade, even outside of my blog. maybe we should all wear equally hip masks or brown paper bags over our heads to indi’s bloggers meet so as to not sorely disappoint each other.

ditto electra. who is prose?

Sittingnut: See, that’s the THING. I too feel like I should be writing something, but I have no idea what to write. So in the time being, I just blog. I’m waiting for inspiration to strike!
Judy: It is true that we are what we write, but at the same time when we have to think before we write, it sounds different; more careful and planned than how we would talk. Blogs aren’t for everyone regardless of whether they’re interesting or not!
Nazreen: You’ve committed a cardinal sin concerning the blog etiquette and you will repent by being indebted to me for a lifetime supply of tic-tacs! No, I’m only joking!!! You’re free to use any theme you like. I always keep changing mine… I am very indecisive. I absolutely love the whole minimalist feel too!
As for the “who is prose”… I’m not sure how to answer that, or was that rhetorical? I am quite new to blogging and I haven’t met in person anyone who I have communicated with through comments… if that’s what you’re wondering.
Electra: Thanks! I really don’t know how to respond… flattered… your comment stumped me… in a good way. I myself always try to picture the person behind the blogger too… but my perceptions are almost always wrong.
But like Sittingnut implied, what we put on in real life is very much a facade too. I find it hard to believe that it is a facade because you come across as very natural and so confident, especially for your age which is incredible. And I mean that in the least possible patronizing way.
I like that idea! I would go with the brown paper bags because it is very hard to maintain the hip masks for a long stretch.
